Proposed PA Senate District 25
Commissioner Nordberg and Members of the Commission, I am Susan Trainor, a resident of Centre County and have raised my family and worked in this community for 27 years. I am writing to express my significant concern with regard to the redistricting of PA Senate district 34 to the (proposed) district 25. Please do not approve the proposed map that creates PA Senate District 25. Specifically I am concerned about the extraordinary and extreme change in partisan representation in the proposed district. Historically District 34 has been configured to provide an equal share of Republican and Democratic representation in elections creating opportunities for all members of our community have their votes count and voices matter. In proposed District 25 the skew to Republican representation at the ballot box will essentially negate Democratic representation in the proposed district. In our increasingly polarized and partisan two-party political system proportional representation is CRITICAL to the preservation of a fair and open democracy at the state level that will allow the diverse voices in our community to inform the legislative process in Harrisburg. Under the proposed redistricted Senate ma, Republican control of the district - especially as disproportionate as it is - will essentially obviate the voice and concerns of Democratic voters in the district. I urge you to reconsider this redistricting in my community. I care deeply and passionately about our democracy. I have no desire to see Democratic voters have an unfair advantage over our Republican neighbors and voters. Democracy is messy at times but it is INCLUSIVE.
