Looking at What Works

In the resolution unanimously agreed upon by the Northampton Township Supervisors, all the salient reasons why our legislative districts should not be divided were articulated very clearly, so it is not prudent to repeat those here. What I will note, is that we are in extremely challenging times that capitalize on division. The residents of Northampton Township have been served very well by being a unified district, open to differing ideas, while respecting party allegiances. The resolution listed all the services that the township residents enjoy---unified in schools, library, senior center, law enforcement, and more, and have been served so well by ONE representative who advocates for over 40,000 residents. That representation has allowed so much to be accomplished, by carrying a clear vision representing so many residents that have a unified interest in the welfare of the township. It is a history of unity that has propelled those decisions forward. This is what has worked...so to spend scarce resources, legislative time and energy in recrafting districts seems without a basis in rationality. What is the purpose in division? What has to be asked is "What greater goals are being served?" It bears examining closely at what works, before propositions are made to change it.
